Our Reunion History

October 1994 saw the inaugural 17 Construction Squadron Workshop Vietnam Association reunion in Canberra, initiated by Dan Garlin with assistance from Tommy Tubbs and Brian Bailey . The reunion was a great success, office bearers were elected and charged with the responsibility to organise a Tasmanian Reunion for August 1996.

The then President:- George Jones, Secretary:- Snowy Whykes and Treasurer:- Merv Flanders (all West Aussie's) conscripted Louise Geal (Tas 'Weigen) and organised a fantastic get together. Our association was actually the Pivotal Point for the very successful Launceston Vietnam Veterans convention and family reunion thirty years on. We were host to all RAEME units in attendance. 17 Construction Squadron Workshop assembled (60 plus) and proudly marched under our own banner for the first time.

Those members in attendance elected, President:- Stewart Meiklejohn, Secretary:- David (Jerry) Lewis, Treasurer:- Ray (3 Coins) Fountain, Liason Officer:- Dan Garlin, as office bearers responsible for the management of our association and the organisation of our next reunion which was held in Brisbane on the Anzac Day weekend 1999.

After another very successful reunion in Brisbane, which was attended by an increasing number of spouses, the members in attendance elected President:- Alan Pratt, Secretary:- Ray Firth, Treasurer:- Billy Wadsworth, Liason Officer:- Merv Flanders to be responsible for running the organisation and to organise the best reunion yet, to be held in Perth in August 2001. Snowy Whykes was  seconded to help again.

Another very successful reunion was held at Perth. At the Perth reunion a new committee, President:- Adrian Blackburn, Secretary:- Peter Ingrey, Treasurer:- Andy Smithett were elected to arrange the next reunion which was held in Sydney in August 2004.

Again another very successful reunion, this time in Sydney each Reunion has been unique in there own way and this was no exception.

The next Reunion was held in Darwin in June 2007, Bob Shewring - President, Mike Sheahan - Secretary, Ryan Chritclow - Treasurer, also as members in Darwin are only 2,  representatives have been appointed for each State:

WA Garry (Snowy) Whykes, TAS Roy Geale, NT Bob Shewring, QLD - Far North Dave (Chalky) Chalk, NSW Bob Callinan, QLD - Sunshine Coast Tom Tubbs, VIC Cliff Richards, QLD - Gold Coast Steve Chapman,
SA Mick Culley, QLD - Brisbane Mike Sheahan.

After an invitation from Ted Egan to have our next reunion in Alice Springs and he would put on a BBQ, this was selected as the next destination for May 2009. A very casual affair with 9 new members who have never attended a reunion, attending for the very first time, a casual atmosphere and well orgainised by Gary (Snowy) Whykes - President, Alan Pratt - Secretary, Ray & Judy Firth - Treasurer made for a great reunion.

Will be a 3 night Ship Cruise departing Sydney on Friday April 29th 2011 and returning Monday 2nd May 2011. Organisers are Garry Whykes and John Fenton.
